Apropos of nothing
Came across this photo yesterday. It is a picture of my mother when she was a little girl, her father, and Robert Wadlow, who is generally considered the tallest man who ever lived. And who apparently also lived near my mother when she was a little girl. My mother is on the right. Wadlow is in glasses. |

Spielberg: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade part 2
Yesterday we left Indy and his father midway through Act II, at the crossroads of their relationship, and the crossroads of the narrative. Indy's got his father, but he still hasn't achieved his goal -- communication with his father. The chase to the crossroads, while light by Indiana Jones standards, has some lovely character beats as Indy grins about the bad guy's he's foiled and his father looks bored and winds his watch. (Indy "jousts" with one of the bad guys, underscoring the "Indy as modern-day knight" metaphor that will become important later.) And honestly, if you can't engage with your sons during a motorcycle chase with a gaggle of Nazi stooges, it's probably never going to happen. They argue at the crossroads, with Indy's father going so far as to slap him for "blasphemy" when he uses the lord's name in vain. ( Illumination. ) |

Blondes have more fun...
My darling Joe is going to Nashville for a few days today. I will be all alone again *evil laugh* He's only been here for 3 years and he's seeing more of the country than I have!!!
I didn't plan for the blonde thing, but maybe that can be a future theme...hmmm. In other news, I bought myself some Photoplays:
Yes, I call all old movie magazines "Photoplays." Don't ask why. Joe told me he would buy me some more when he gets back from TN. Is my man the best, or what????

ideas...
![]() So, in prepping some promotion ideas my buddy He also suggested that I ask people to start reviewing/listmania/discussion stuff on Amazon. So... if you're inclined... I'd be appreciative. I'm going to give it a shot. I'm really proud of the Postage Stamp book set. I want it to sell.

EPTESICUS FUSCUS
![]() ![]() ![]() Was moving around my flower pots to sweep out the dogwood blossoms from this week's storm, and found this Big Brown Bat hiding behind them. He seems to have an injured wing, but I've left him alone for the time being, as he's holed up in an elevated crevice between the house and a fence post. I'll keep an eye on him to see if he requires an intervention. He started to make his way towards the front of the house where the neighbor's cat would surely see him, so I tried to shoo him back the way he came with my gloved hand. He did not take kindly to my advice, and opened his little red maw and let out a piercing screech, which actually startled me (I'd forgotten how vocal they can be). I was reminded of this later in the evening when my friend Bill took me out to an old Quaker meeting hall to identify a plant, and discovered a large pile of bat guano under two noisy bat houses above me in the eaves. Hope the little fellow can pull through. Bat populations have taken an awful hit recently, you know. ~W |

Back on the Information Superhighway
Five days of being cut off from the online word has come to an end. I didn't think I was gonna make it, but this is my crazy week at work, so I was at the office late and managed to get a quick fix. The Internet and I are tight. I'm an Online Editor, so Web sites are like my second home; being locked out for so long was frustrating. It turns out there was an outage in my part of Brooklyn that Time Warner claimed to know nothing about. How reassuring...I did get them to credit my account for $8--I'll try not to spend it in one place. I called my landlady from work a few hours ago to see if she would be home tomorrow night because I had a Technician scheduled for a visit. I'm a relic, when it comes to TV--I still use rabbit ears--I won't get cable until I absolutely have to in 2009--that's also when I'll treat myself to a sleek state-of-the-art flat-screen TV--mine is a gigantic relic with, **gasp** a picture tube! I must go now. I have lots of Web sites to update and stories to send to Editors. I just wanted to let you know I'm not dead...

Thank you
Some people have been sending me money in response to the request for an investor–sometimes a hundred dollars. I hadn’t been asking for donations; I appreciate them all the more for that. If you sent in a hundred dollars, I think you deserve something spiffy as a thank you; Reesa and Kit and I have been kicking around ideas for exactly what. When we come up with something, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, you have the thanks of a grateful writer.
Meanwhile, concerning the loan request mentioned earlier, if there are people interested in investing smaller amounts (technically, this is a note of hand, not an investment in the business, as it is unsecured), say 3-10k, let us know at the email addresses mentioned in the earlier post. In other news, I’m working on chapter 10 of Iorich, and I think it’s going pretty well. (Originally posted at Words Words Words by skzb. Please leave any comments there.) |

I feel it all.
It is hard to work on Radical Acceptance of the news today. My life always feels so small and ridiculous when things like this occur. And yet it is how the world is. And we happen to live in this world less than millions of others. It is what it is. Enjoy every moment. Be yourself. Reject guilt. Send a buck or two if you can. |

Can you help ?
Hi all... I am fairly new at this knitting thing ( well, I learned like 2 years ago but I pick it up sporadically) and Ive endeavoured to make yet another scarf. This one is striped and uses three colors but I don't understand the beginning instructions. It says : So... What does knit first stitch through back loop mean and I don't understand. Am I knitting with both colors. Which color do I cast on with ? If someone could direct me to a video guide on this that would rock. I am much better at learning by watching. Something with pictures would work too. Thanks so much ~! |

I have the best husband ever.
For my birthday, Andrew commissioned a pinup from Roger Langridge, who is, among other things, a regular cartoonist and illustrator for Doctor Who Magazine in Britain. Look what Roger drew for me!
And look how much I love it!
Incidentally, Roger sells his original art at absurdly cheap prices, if you'd like Doctor Who comics of your very own--or any of his other work, including his wonderful strip Fred the Clown. He's also drawn Fin Fang Foom and stuff. |

Spielberg: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
WHAT DOES THE PROTAGONIST WANT? Indiana Jones, although still interested in historic artifacts, is here interested in a goal less tangible and harder to gain than a Peruvian idol or Sankara Stone -- communication with his father. The structure of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is quite a bit more conventional than the structures of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom -- those movies had four acts of roughly equal length, with three chapters in each act, for a total of twelve chapters. I find Last Crusade to be more conventionally structured, a straight-ahead three-act narrative with a prelude. |
